TECH QUICKIE – I Can’t Connect To The ECU
Hands-down the best way of connecting to an E, P or S series ECU…is RS232 serial. However, the chances of finding a serial port on a modern day laptop are about as good as us trying to flog you an ‘EFI delete’ kit.
So then, a USB adaptor is called for…but not any adaptor. No, it MUST contain a Prolific chipset, not FTDI. Even then, there are fake Prolific adaptors out there that show up in device manager correctly and will even take the correct drivers but still won’t work with the ECU. The new Windows 7/8/10 software is a bit more forgiving when it comes to serial adaptors but the old XP software is not and if your ECU is running a pre-v70 firmware, you’ll have to use the XP software.
But I bought the cable and serial adaptor from you!?
Ok, don’t panic, there’s a guide for that: https://www.dtafast.co.uk/download_files/Manuals/Prolific Adapter Troubleshooting.pdf
